Playa Negra's claim to fame came when it was shown in "Endless Summer II", a well know surf and travel film. As the name suggests, Playa Negra's beaches are filled with beautiful black sand. Ositional is known for its National Wildlife refuge protecting sea turtle nesting zones. The largest recorded number of nesting turtles was 500,000 in one day but every year they number in the hundreds of thousands. Marbella means beautiful sea and it fills it name sake. It boasts one of the best beach break waves in Costa Rica. Junquillal is also beautiful and attracts surfers like Marbella. In the town of San Juanillo, about 35-minute drive from RDS, there are some restaurants, bars, fishing village, and accommodations. The nearest golf course at Hacienda Pinilla near Playa Negra, is about 45 minute drive from RDS. Hacienda Pinilla is a 4,500 acre luxury beach resort and gated residential community with world-class golf course, tennis courts, hotel, surf spots, scuba diving, stables and restaurants, which are available to investors, residents and tourists. The major international airport is in the capital city of San Jose. Driving from San Jose to RDS can take over six hours. The Liberia International airport in Liberia is only two-hour drive away. The planned expansion of the Liberia airport will go a long way in increasing tourism and development to the region. The planned international airport is in Golfito. Although Golfito is too far to drive to RDS, it may relieve pressure and lower prices at the other airports.In addition to the international airports, there are over 20 domestic airports.
